Trips
Where the mighty Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean lies one of the most legendary salmon fisheries in the world. Welcome to Astoria, Oregon—home to the world-famous Buoy 10 salmon run. Every late summer, massive schools of salmon stage in these nutrient-rich waters before making their push upstream, creating a world-class angling opportunity that you simply have to experience to believe.
With DG Columbia Adventures, you can hit the water during peak season with a local expert who knows these dynamic waters inside and out. Whether you are a seasoned angler chasing a 30-plus pound King or a first-timer looking to experience the thrill of a chaotic salmon bite, our Astoria fishing charters deliver action-packed days and memories that will last a lifetime.
The Legendary Buoy 10 Experience
Buoy 10 is not just a marker; it represents a 15-mile stretch of the Columbia River estuary from the actual Buoy 10 marker up to the Astoria-Megler Bridge. Because this is a major staging area for returning fish, the sheer volume of salmon funnelling through this narrow corridor is staggering. We base our Astoria trips around the tides and fish movement, varying our early-morning start times to give you the absolute best shot at hitting your limit.
Local Tip: Weather at the mouth of the Columbia can be unpredictable, even in late summer. Always dress in layers and bring a reliable windbreaker or rain jacket!
Target Species in Astoria
Our Astoria trips focus on the peak August runs, targeting the ocean-fresh, hard-fighting salmon that make this region famous.
- Chinook (King) Salmon: The undisputed heavyweights of the Buoy 10 run. These silver-sided bruisers typically average 15 to 20 pounds, but it is not uncommon for our guests to battle 30 to 40-pound monsters during peak season. Kings hit hard, fight deep, and will test your drag with long, powerful runs.
- Coho (Silver) Salmon: Pure athletes of the estuary. Ranging from 8 to 15 pounds, Coho are aggressive biters and incredible acrobats. Once hooked, they are notorious for spectacular aerial displays, sometimes jumping several feet clear out of the water. Both species offer incredible, restaurant-grade table fare.
Our Astoria Fishing Techniques
Fishing the Columbia River mouth requires specific tactics. We rely heavily on trolling with downriggers to cover the water column from the surface down to 40 feet. Depending on what the fish are responding to that day, Captain Don Gresham will set you up with proven presentations:
- Fresh Herring: A classic, highly effective bait for ocean-fresh salmon.
- Spinners & Spoons: Perfect for triggering aggressive reaction strikes.
- Plugs & Flashers: Used to draw fish in from a distance in the murky estuary waters.
Your guide will handle the technical aspects—reading the electronics, managing the gear, and tracking the bait schools—while teaching you the fundamentals of hooking and fighting these powerful fish.
Why Choose DG Columbia Adventures for Your Astoria Trip?
- Professional Navigation: The Columbia River mouth can be choppy and dynamic. Captain Don Gresham is a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed guide who prioritizes your safety while expertly positioning the boat for optimal fishing.
